Ivan Pyotrovitch Romanov, The Overlord

Character Background / History

Ivan Pyotrovitch Romanov was born in 1908, to a family of minor nobility in Tsarist Russia. Young Ivan was a sickly child, so he spent most of his days indoors, reading the books on Western science and technology in his father's grand library. And at night, his nurse would regale Vanya with tales of Russia's folklore.

When the Bolsheviks came into power, only Ivan escaped alive, and then only with the help of his nurse. She took young Vanya with her, fleeing to the frozen wilds of Siberia. No longer subject to the disapproval of Ivan's father, and needing every means available to ensure their survival, the nurse finally began to teach Ivan the secrets of magic. For his nurse was a witch of the Old Russia, and that is how she had known so much of Russia's legends. Ivan took to his studies of magic with the same ferocity and passion as which he had devoured Western science. Soon, Ivan was an accomplished sorceror.

With the Nazis' rise to power in Germany in the 1930s, Ivan sensed an opportunity to avenge himself against the "peasants" who had destroyed his family and home. Ivan joined with the Nazis' occult researchers, while also lending his aid to Germany's efforts at re-industrialization. Once Germany invaded Russia, however, relations soured between Ivan and the Nazi elite. The last straw came in January of 1942, when a team of S.S. tried to murder Ivan in his labs. Ivan survived the assassination attempt, and in his escape, he destroyed the research facility, the mountain in which the facility was located, and several formerly-tranquil villages downslope from the mountain...

After the War, while Europe was rebuilding itself, a man calling himself Jonathon Peterson created an industrial and corporate empire stretching throughout Western Europe and North America. Once his wealth was established, Ivan concealed his fortune, severing all connections to his identity as Jonathon Peterson. Ivan spent the next several years mastering sorcery as well as science. He built several hidden fortresses, stockpiled weapons, and recruited (or, more often, crafted) minions, in preparation for the day when he would begin his campaign to rule humanity.

Overlord's Android Dopplegangers

Most often, an android encountered by the heroes will be in the guise of Ivan himself. Ivan refers to these androids as his "Type 1" series.

Less often, Ivan will construct an android to replicate a specific other individual. Regardless of who is being impersonated, Ivan refers to these other androids collectively as his "Type 2" series.
